I’d like to begin this message by thanking everyone involved in The Shaw Mind Foundation, especially for authoring and distributing the book “Pulling the Trigger: OCD, Anxiety, Panic Attacks and Related Depression – The definitive survival and recovery approach”.

As I’m writing this message I can safely say that the PTT method has truly changed my outlook on life. I have been a lifelong sufferer of anxiety, panick attacks and intrusive thoughts, and as many others I’ve mostly suffered alone.

My childhood and adolescent experiences with anxiety inhibited me from truly exploring life to its fullest, dealing great damage to my relationships and academic life. If only I’d read about Adam’s story earlier in my life I think much of the hardships I’ve endured could’ve been avoided.

Mental illness, OCD, anxiety and intrusive thoughts etc. are all extremely treatable issues and with the help of psychoeducation (such as the educational aspects presented in the book by Dr Lauren Callaghan) I truly believe that anyone can overcome their mental illness. With the help of your book I’m finally taking the first correct steps towards getting better.

Best regards and greetings from Finland,

Jens Rantanen

If you have a child who suffers with anxieties – buy this book!

This book has been invaluable for my 6 year old – we have enjoyed working through it and his anxieties have improved beyond belief. It is well set out, concise & clear and the characters and pictures have kept him engaged.
I thought my little boy was going to need professional help and would benefit from some cognitive therapy but this book has meant we have not needed to go that route.
Best £16.99 I have ever spent!
The first section (aimed at parents) was a tear jerker for me as it is an insight into Adam’s condition and it helped me understand what my 6 year old was going through.
Adam & Lauren – Thank you ❤️

Inspirational, brave and honest as well as a great read!

‘Stand tall, little girl’ is a ‘must read’ for anyone who is experiencing the misery of anorexia nervosa or knows someone who is. Hope tells the story of her relationship with the illness which included a year spent in hospital, a relapse and her recovery. It pulls no punches, is honest and is very engagingly written. She writes letters to her false friend, Anorexia, and to her loved ones who had to look on while the illness took over. She also examines possible triggers to the onset of the disease but also gives some simple but very useful tips for recovery and coping with life post anorexia. I found the ending incredibly uplifting and I’m sure that the book will be of benefit to anyone in the throes of this terrible disease. It is fitting that the book is dedicated to “all those suffering” and urges them to keep fighting. I am not surprised that this book is published as part of Trigger Press’s ‘Inspirational’ series.

Beautiful and Brave

Hope writes brilliantly and bravely about overcoming and living with anorexia nervosa. She is incredibly honest and brave and the book is very well written, taking you on a journey through her mental illness and how she manages it, with her family I really loved reading this hopeful true story and think it will go some way to battling mental health stigma. Well done and congratulations Hope, its a must read!.

I was quite emotional after finishing this book. We journey with Hope through the pain and the good times, as Hope slowly realises that her Anorexia is not the best friend she thought she was. The writing is informal and enjoyable; a mix of story-telling, diary entries, letters to loved ones, and excerpts of an essay by Hope’s mum. Hope recognises that this battle is hers for life, but has advice and tips for coping strategies. I really hope that any one else with an eating disorder can take strength and inspiration from Hope’s experiences.

Phenomenal

This book has quite frankly change my life. I have suffered from OCD for 20 years. I have been using the methods in this book now for a couple of months and I am a different person. I used to spend twenty minutes checking the washing machine is off. Now I spend seconds. I used to have to frequently, several times a day ask my husband for reassurance and get him to check appliances and locks a number of times for me, now I ask for none. It’s no walk in the park and YOU have to put in the hard work to get better but this book could change your life. I would say I am about 70% recovered now. The methods in this book are new to me and follows a new, different and actually quite simple approach. I have had therapy before in the past and none of it has helped me more than this book.

AN UPDATE – A couple of months have passed and I would now say I’m 95% cured of OCD.

Insightful, thought provoking and life changing

An extremely well written book. I like the fact that this book focuses on recovery. The first hand account from Adam I feel seemed very brave and honest. As a student studying integrative Psychotherapy I have kept away from CBT methods as I have felt it only scratches the surface. However, this book has changed my mind. It has given me a different perspective and one that I will now pursue. A good solid resource I will use in my studies and practice. Most importantly a very good insightful read !!

Young person fighting the demons of her so called best friend anorexia

A truly inspirational read of a young person fighting the demons of her so called best friend anorexia, how her friend made her feel and eventual realisation that anorexia was not really her friend. A must read for not only someone suffering with anorexia, but for family and friends. Hope is now surviving from her battle with anorexia and shows with help and support how it can be beaten.

Such a useful book on so many levels

Such a useful book on so many levels. So clearly expresses what life can be like living with OCD and related issues and the impact that such problems can have on ones day to day life. That there is such an encouraging and clear story of recovery, well documented and supported with technical explanation by the psychotherapist, is really inspiring. Such a journey that has and will continually have to be travelled. Love the actual feel of the book itself too and the clear layout. The tips and recommendations for action to be taken to improve the lives of those readers whom suffer in the same way will prove invaluable, I am sure.

Easy to understand and implement approach to reduce worry

Simple, easy to understand and implement approach to reduce worry, anxiety and OCD. The split into sections for parents, younger children and teenagers works well. Has been a big help to me and my child. Highly recommended for anyone with a child that worries a lot or suffers from anxiety, particularly in today’s social media focussed world.

A powerful story of struggle and recovery

As someone who has experienced mental health issues but not an eating disorder, I found Hope’s story both eye opening and relatable at the same time. I particularly appreciated Hope’s resolve and the need to develop coping mechanisms for if and when your mental health issues reoccurr. A valuable read for anyone who is experiencing or has experienced mental health issues.

A must read for anyone affected by anorexia. Raw, honest and inspirational.

Hope has achieved great things with this book. Not only has her totally raw honesty allowed an insight into life with anorexia, but through her writing, she acts as an inspirational role model for all those in recovery. Easy to follow whilst also being a compelling read, I couldn’t put this down as I followed Hope’s journey. Well done Hope Virgo, a fantastically produced book.

Would definitely recommend this. Well done Hope

I finished reading this book at the weekend this was one of the most inspirational things I have ever read! Every page was so thought provoking and if that’s the impact it’s had on me I can only imagine how much this is going to help and support so many others. This is a really brave and honest account. Things from this book will stay with me for a long time and I’m just so grateful already for reading it, and I honestly can’t stop thinking about snippets from the book during the days… would definitely recommend this. Where do I start – this is a truly inspirational book, a sad but powerful story of how mental health can not only effect an individual but the family and friends surrounding the person living with an eating disorder. I hope this brings encouragement to both girls and boys who are currently affected by an eating disorder. You are not alone!! I would highly recommend this book so people can understand the effects of mental health 🙂

Amazing

Such an inspirational book! Would recommend to to anyone recovering from an eating disorder, or even their family and friends. Hope signed a copy of my book as well as presenting an inspirational talk at my university. Best book I’ve read in a long time!

Brave, personal story

I read Hope’s book in just over 24 hours as I couldn’t put it down. It’s inspiring for any person who experiences mental health issues, as an individual or as a friend or family member of someone who has. It’s written in a friendly, chatty style with humour and lots of sadness. I think Hope is incredibly brave to tell the story, but I’m glad she has as so many other people will take courage from her words.

Practical advice from a professional that anyone can follow, not preachy. It worked for the author, it may well work for others. Interesting to read about his experiences with OCD and anxiety – glad he managed to walk away from that bridge.

So inspiring and helpful!

Such an inspirational, honest and engaging story about a fight with anorexia that is eventually won! Great writing style and a must read for those who are going through similar struggles as well as for their family and friends.

One of the best books I have read to help me and understand my condition.

I suffer from Anxiety, Panic Attacks and OCD. The following two books listed below are the best I have read so far to help me and understand my condition I have had for over 35 years.

I have had Cognitive behaviour therapy with NHS Scotland in Glasgow on a one to one basis and group session and it was no were near as informative or helpful as these two books.

1) Pulling the Trigger: OCD, Anxiety, Panic Attacks and Related Depression – The Definitive Survival and Recovery Approach by Lauren Callaghan (psychologist) and Adam Shaw

2) Anxiety: Panicking about Panic: by Joshua Fletcher

Cognitive behavioral therapy with NHS Scotland is a SICK joke.
NHS Scotland Staff make a fool of patients with mental health issues. I wish I had the money to go private.

Highly recommended !!

I recently bought this book to work through with my 8 yo girl. While she has not been diagnosed as yet, she has started to show some symptoms of OCD. I hoped this book would educate me, and give me some help with my daughter before seeking out any more intrusive help by taking her to doctors/consultants etc. It has proved to be a fantastic help, and my daughter loved reading and going through the worksheets together. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who even suspects their child may be suffering from OCD, panic

Useful and insightful so far!

I haven’t finished this book yet but my son and I have been working through it. He seems to find it really engaging and loves completing the exercises. I have to admit, I was sceptical about how useful a book would actually be when it comes to effectively treating my son’s OCD and anxiety, but Lauren and Adam have really made something unique here. I find myself understanding my son’s condition more.
Lauren and Adam- well done. This book is useful and I would definitely recommend it. Someone give this an award!

Best OCD self-help guide on the market

This book is a fantastic resource for both people suffering with OCD, Panic Attacks and related Depression and for those working with them. I have read a number of books on this topic including therapist manuals, self-help guides and those written from the perspective of the sufferer, as well as treating many people with OCD over the past decade or so. This book is by far the best that I have read – Lauren explains the development, maintenance and treatment of OCD with a clear common-sense style avoiding unnecessary jargon. The conversational style of the book really brings the topic alive and I think Adam’s story will be instantly relatable to people who are suffering with OCD and the section by Adam’s wife on the family perspective is very helpful. I have already recommended the book to clients that I am working with and will continue to do so. Thanks Lauren and Adam.

Amazon Customer

The perfect combination of an autobiography and a self help guide.

This book successfully manages to combine the interest of an autobiographical journey through an OCD sufferer’s first hand experience, with the practical help of a running commentary from an OCD specialist. The result of which is a book which draws you in to Adam’s own personal story in it’s own right but also provides a way forward for those facing their own struggles with the disorder.

This really is a book which allows OCD sufferers to know that they are not alone and that a brighter future can be theirs.

Must read.

Absolutely amazing.Has led me to have a much better understanding of certain issues not only I have faced but so many others, and more importantly how to deal and in some cases overcome these delibertating problems.

Inspiring read

A real page turner, very insightful

A real page-turner, I was up until 3am without even noticing, powering through the chapters. Hope’s story is a sad but inspirational one. It made me wonder how many girls at school were going through the same thing and I didn’t even realise. She’s made the best of a bad situation by sharing the intimate details of her mental health struggle in the hope that she can help others. I would highly recommend this book to sufferers themselves, friends and family, and anyone who wants to open their mind up to what life is like for people with an eating disorder or mental health problem.

Amazon Customer

Two extraordinary books in one

Pulling the Trigger is really two books in one. On the one hand, it’s a remarkable self-help book, offering hope and practical advice to anyone suffering with OCD. But it’s also a personal story. A journey from childhood, through the darkest days of a man’s life, and on into a bright future.

Unlike books that flit between different case studies without really giving a sense of context, Pulling the Trigger has a clear beginning-to-end narrative. That doesn’t just make it infinitely more compelling, it makes it that rare thing in this field: an honest-to-goodness page turner!

By the time you get to the end of the book, you’ll feel like you know Adam Shaw. You’ll certainly feel like you’ve been on a profound journey together. You might even feel a little bit elated by the experience, because this is a story with a happy ending. And not just for Adam…

Anyone can read this book and feel better for the experience. And if you come to it in search of specific help for OCD, you’ll definitely get it. Adam’s story is supplemented throughout by contributions from Dr Lauren Callaghan. It’s a very effective way of structuring the book so that readers get a professional insight into the path of Adam’s recovery process.

Anyone who is moved by the spirit of human triumph over adversity can’t help but be inspired by the story. But there’s more to come…

The final section of the book is your very own self-help guide. Packed with so many little actions that you can work on straightaway – as well as medium and longer-term strategies – this section will be an invaluable resource to keep coming back to.

I came away from Adam’s story feeling inspired; you will too.

Amazon Customer

Brilliant! Brilliant! Brilliant!

An incredibly unique approach to mental health! I loved how Adam’s story intertwined with Dr Lauren’s commentary.

Highly recommend – inspirational read

Fantastic book and a really interesting approach on sharing experiences of anxiety and OCD – two of the most common illnesses in today’s society which don’t get covered enough. This book does it in both a professional and thoughtful way making it a real page turner. I would definitely seek the advice of Lauren Callaghan and highly recommend to anyone who suffers from anxiety or knows someone close to them that does.

Finally – personal and professional combined

There’s nothing else out there like this; usually just professional views – this is a real person’s experience and then what a professional understands about it – great. Have been waiting for something like this for ages. Thank you. There is hope!

Amazon Customer

Inspiring

Amazing!! The way the book tells Adam’s story with comments from Lauren and then in part two Lauren gives suggestions and exercises to tackle your own ocd, this approach gives a rounded view on the whole journey. Having read Adams story I am now filled with hope and am already taking on board Lauren’s advice. I would strongly recommend this book for anyone who suffers from ocd, anxiety and also for their friends and family I have already passed it onto my husband to read.

Useful coping techniques for OCD, anxiety, panic attacks, depression and worry

An excellent book detailing Adam Shaw’s journey from the brink of suicide to recovery from OCD. What’s interesting about this book is that it’s not only a sufferer telling their story but it’s also his clinical psychologist comment on what happened to Adam, the reasons why therapy hadn’t previously worked for him combined with her words about the CBT based therapy she put into place for Adam which led him to recovery. I think the book will be of huge benefit to OCD sufferers and their families but also to those seeking to alleviate panic attacks, anxiety, depression, PTSD and worry. I read it with a friend in mind wanting to learn more about OCD but it has helped me in my own life too with occasional worry and anxiety. I keep remembering the techniques mentioned in the book and do apply them to my own life. It has been helpful knowledge to have for parenting too. When children get anxious and worried about the normal things in life I find myself thinking about some of the coping strategies in this book. I’ll have to buy the upcoming juniors edition!

Very well crafted and really helpful, Adam’s bit on acceptance blew me away, love their clever vision in ensuring the proceeds go to their charity so us sufferers can help ourselves and help others at the same time, such a great idea, would love to meet Adam and Lauren.

Excellent!

Having worked with people suffering with anxiety and specifically OCD in the past I have come across a number of books and self-help guides on the subject. Whereas some other books in this field tend to struggle with pacing; I found Pulling the Trigger to flow smoothly and having the book written from the perspective of both the sufferer and the therapist also provides a new level of insight. I would definitely recommend reading or listening!

Amazon Customer

Very Informative

The format of the book makes it extremely easy to read and understand and so enlightening for family and friends of sufferers.

Great self help book for people with OCD

I downloaded this e-book as part of the free audible trial and I know someone who has OCD. I wanted to see if I thought the book will help them. It helps to hear the sufferer’s story and then the psychologist’s take on things and the simple approach to recovery. I’m definitely going to recommend this book to my friend.
